Tongaat Tornado Relief

Sewa International SA provided critical aid to communities affected by the Tongaat tornado in June 2024. Here’s an overview of our efforts:

Essential Supplies (04-06 June 2024)

Water & Food:

  • 642 x 5L bottled water
  • 268 disaster hampers
  • 350 kg grain
  • 150 kg beans
  • 36 x canned food

Basic Necessities:

  • 246 blankets
  • 848 toilet paper rolls
  • 44 packs of diapers
  • 3 boxes of clothing

Building Material Assistance:

Focused on providing uninsured families with materials to rebuild their homes. 

  • 12 bundles of batten
  • 100 pockets of cement
  • 5,000 clay bricks
  • 8 rolls of roof underlay
  • 100 kg nails
  • 1500 Marley tiles
  • 2000 Coverland tiles
  • 4 x 20L white paint
  • 2 large chainsaws
  • 30 shutterboards
  • 15 tarps (3m and 5m)
  • Roofing materials and tools

Services & Clearing:

  • Fixed doors and windows
  • 3 roof repairs
  • Cut and cleared trees
  • Removed 60 tons of rubble
  • Mobilized a team of 26 volunteers and staff

Extended Scope of Work:

  • Strengthened structures through wall stitching and underpinning.
  • Replaced external doors and implemented drainage systems.
  • Ensured homes were safe, livable, and structurally sound.
